Russia has caused outrage in Poland by simulating an air and sea attack on the country during military exercises. Armed forces of Russia and Belarus simulated amphibious landing on Polish coast and firing nuclear weapons.
This information was revealed by weekly “Wprost” that came across documents describing those maneuvers that were supposed to be held in September. In this war games scenario called “Operation West” Poland was described as a “potential aggressor” and Russia practiced its “defense” that included firing nuclear missiles, attacking Polish beaches from Kaliningrad’s enclave, attacking a gas pipeline and suppressing Polish minority uprising in Belarus.
This revelation has caused rage and fury in Poland among ordinary Poles and politicians. Karol Karski, an MP from Poland's Law and Justice, is to prepare parliamentary debate on Russia's war games and has protested to the European Commission.
His colleague, Marek Opiola said: "It's an attempt to put us in our place. Don't forget all this happened on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of Poland."
This issue is especially boiling blood in Polish veins as the country stayed under Russian influence for 40 years after the World War II. We are afraid that Russia, which obviously has a neo-imperialistic agenda would like to regain its position form XIXth century.
Meanwhile, Moscow and Minsk have insisted that Operation West was to help "ensure the strategic stability in the East European region".

The outrage in Poland is fueled by deep historical resentments and suspicions. Fear of the Russian threat goes back centuries. While I was in Wroclaw last summer, I took in this big diorama, which commemorates a battle in 1794 (the Poles won the battle, the Russians won the war).
